The Hidden ROI of a Well-Chosen Commercial Fence

Every good business decision keeps return on investment (ROI) in mind. Commercial fencing is no exception.

While fences are often considered basic necessities, a well-chosen fence adds value to a commercial property far beyond security. From enhancing property appeal to protecting assets, the right commercial fence can significantly impact your commercial property’s value.

Resolut Construction specializes in providing high-quality fencing solutions designed to maximize these hidden benefits. Whether it's boosting security, reducing maintenance costs, or offering marketing potential, Resolut’s expertise allows businesses the opportunity to get the most out of their fencing investments.

Enhanced Security and Protection

A commercial fence is a powerful tool for deterring theft and vandalism. By creating a physical barrier, it protects the exterior, reducing the likelihood of trespassing or break-ins. Whether it's securing expensive equipment or inventory, a well-chosen fence adds an extra layer of security.

Beyond theft prevention, fences also play an important role in maintaining safety. In industrial zones or areas with hazardous equipment, a sturdy fence can prevent unauthorized access, protecting both employees and customers from potential accidents. Additionally, fences around parking lots and loading zones help regulate traffic, ensuring safer vehicle movement and reducing the risk of collisions.

A well-installed fence can also lead to significant financial savings through reduced insurance premiums. Insurance providers often reward businesses with proactive security measures, offering lower premiums due to decreased risks of theft, vandalism, or injury.

Key aspects of a commercial fence’s security benefits include:

  • Material Durability: Choose steel or iron fences that are resistant to damage and tampering to promote long-term protection.
  • Height and Visibility: Taller fences with limited visibility make it more difficult for potential intruders to assess and target a property, increasing security.
  • Adding Features for Extra Protection: To deter trespassers, incorporate security enhancements like barbed wire or motion-sensor lighting.
  • Location-specific considerations: Tailor your fencing to the property’s location—for instance, urban areas may need additional reinforcements due to higher crime rates.

A thoughtfully designed commercial fence by Resolut Construction helps organize the flow of people and vehicles while safeguarding restricted areas, creating a more secure and efficient environment for your business.

Operational Efficiency and Organization

A well-chosen fence does more than just secure a property — it actively enhances the organization of commercial spaces. In environments like manufacturing plants, warehouses, and corporate areas, fencing can help organize operations and boost overall efficiency. By strategically dividing areas, it improves workflow and optimizes the use of space.

  • Separation of Work Zones: Fencing allows businesses to separate different operational areas. For example, specific sections can be fenced off in manufacturing plants for assembly, storage, or logistics, reducing confusion and improving productivity.
  • Improved Inventory Control: Fences can also create secure storage areas for high-value inventory or sensitive materials, preventing unauthorized access and ensuring a smoother inventory management process.
  • Enhanced Outdoor Storage: Commercial fencing allows businesses to create protected outdoor storage areas, freeing up valuable indoor space and allowing them to store bulk items or machines more efficiently.

In addition to improving the physical organization of spaces, fencing can also strengthen security and safety protocols by controlling access to restricted areas.

  • Defined Emergency Exits: Fencing can help outline clear emergency exit paths for employees and customers, providing a safe evacuation route during emergencies.
  • Facilitating Construction and Expansion: When businesses expand or undergo construction, temporary fencing can provide a clear boundary between active construction sites and regular operations, ensuring safety while maintaining workflow.
  • Simplified Waste Management: Fencing can section off areas for dumpsters and recycling, ensuring waste is managed efficiently and kept out of sight of customers and clients. This contributes to a cleaner and more organized space.
  • Increased Safety During Deliveries: Fencing can create dedicated spaces for deliveries, separating loading zones from other business operations and reducing the risk of accidents.

Partnering with Resolut Construction on commercial fencing can help you improve organization, boost security, and even increase productivity. Ultimately, this means smoother daily operations and a better use of your space.

Marketing and Branding Potential

Fences aren't just about keeping things in or out; they're a great way to get your business noticed. Think of them as giant billboards!

  • Branded Signage and Logos: Fences provide a vast, open area for giant advertisements to display information on products or services. This identifies the business and extends brand presence to everyone who passes by.

  • Custom Advertisements: Businesses can customize their advertisements to feature special promotions, upcoming events, or important announcements, making the fence a dynamic tool for ongoing marketing campaigns.
  • High Visibility: Fences may face busy streets, highways, sidewalks, and neighbourhoods. A strategically placed fence in these high-traffic areas can increase business visibility, drawing the attention of potential customers. This increased exposure can significantly grow your customer base.

Additionally, a well-designed and maintained fence can significantly improve curb appeal in sectors like retail or hospitality, where first impressions are everything. The style and quality of your fence can set the tone for customer expectations and experiences, reflecting your brand’s attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Resolut Construction helps businesses transform their fencing into a wise investment that delivers returns in security, aesthetics, and marketing potential, utilizing the dual functions of security and marketing.

Wildlife Control and Property Management

We've talked about how fences keep out unwanted human visitors, but don't forget about the local wildlife. Critters can be a lot more persistent than people!

Fences are a must in residential communities, such as condos and townhouses, to keep wildlife from getting in and causing problems.

  • Effective Barrier Against Wildlife: Fences act as a physical barrier that keeps deer, rabbits, raccoons, and other wildlife from accessing gardens, playgrounds, and garbage disposal areas. This prevents potential messes and damage that could lead to costly cleanup and repairs.
  • Preservation of Gardens and Green Spaces: By deterring wildlife, fences help maintain the aesthetic and health of communal gardens and landscape areas. This is particularly important in communities where outdoor aesthetics contribute significantly to property value.
  • Reduced Garbage Disruption: Secure fencing minimizes the chances of animals tipping over garbage bins or scattering trash, which can be a significant nuisance and attract more wildlife to the area.

Along with wildlife control, fences can also contribute to overall property maintenance and cost management:

  • Lower Maintenance Costs: Preventing animal-related damage reduces the frequency and cost of repairs to landscaping and outdoor structures, leading to substantial savings for homeowners associations or property management teams.
  • Increased Property Value: Well-maintained outdoor areas, free from wildlife damage, enhance the overall appeal and value of the property. A secure and attractive fence is a significant part of this appeal.

Resolut Construction offers durable and attractive fencing solutions that enhance security and control wildlife, keeping properties beautiful and functional while optimizing maintenance costs.

Can a Backyard Fence Add Value to Your Home?

Can a Backyard Fence Add Value to Your Home?

Wondering whether a backyard fence truly adds value to your home? Beyond defining your property line, a well-designed fence is a valuable investment.

Fences enhance your outdoor living space, privacy, security, and curb appeal. So, the answer is yes: the right fence can transform your yard and add tangible value to your home!

At Resolut Construction, we specialize in crafting fences that are not only functional but also effortlessly integrated with your home’s appeal. Let’s explore how a simple addition like a fence can add to your home’s value.

The Impact of Fences on Property Value

When considering home improvements that boost property values, don’t overlook the value of exterior upgrades like fences. A well-designed fence isn’t just meant to separate your backyard from your neighbours – it enhances the entire property.

Over 75% of the top real estate agents say that homes with landscaping, including features like fences, are worth 1-10% more than homes with no landscaping. This statistic comes as no surprise, as they highlight how much aesthetics and functionality can appeal to potential home buyers.

First impressions matter, especially when it comes to selling your home. A home that looks well-maintained from the outside draws buyers’ attention, creating more interest and potentially driving up the final sale price.

While a fence can significantly boost your home's value, the actual return on investment (ROI) varies based on several factors. The condition of your property, the local market, the location of your home, and the quality of your fence itself all affect its marketability.

Resolut Construction understands these dynamics and helps homeowners choose the right type of fence that not only meets your immediate needs, but also enhances your home’s potential resale value.

Factors Influencing the Value Added by Fences

Material choice, design aesthetics, and neighbourhood compatibility play important roles in determining your investment's immediate impact and long-term benefits.

Material Choice

There are plenty of different materials to choose them when installing a fence. Choosing the right fencing material involves balancing personal preferences with practical considerations like durability. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each material:

  • Wood: Wood fencing can enhance your backyard by providing a classic, warm aesthetic. Its natural beauty blends more easily with plants, trees, or bushes. However, wood needs regular upkeep, such as staining or painting to prevent decay from pests and damage from the sun.
  • Vinyl: Many homeowners choose vinyl fencing because it is low-maintenance and will never rot or fade. Although it has higher upfront costs compared to wood, it may save you money in the long run since there are no maintenance costs.
  • Iron: If you value durability and a high-end look, iron fencing can significantly boost curb appeal. It is important to note that Iron is prone to rust from humidity and rain if not properly treated.
  • Chain Link: Chain link fencing is a cost-effective, practical, and durable choice for fencing. However, it offers less privacy and aesthetic appeal, which may not suit some buyer preferences.

Design and Aesthetics

The design of the fence can also influence buyer perception and property value:

  • Horizontal vs. Vertical Boards: Horizontal boards offer a modern look that can make your backyard appear wider and more open. Vertical boards are more traditional.
  • Colour and Finish: The great part about fencing is you can choose a colour or finish that can either make its features stand out or effortlessly blend into your existing property style.

Neighbourhood Compatibility

The type of neighborhood you live in, whether suburban or rural, can significantly influence the ROI of a fence installation:

  • Urban Areas: Fences are of high value in urban neighbourhoods and densely populated areas. Fences provide extra privacy, security, and seclusion from the proximity of neighbours.
  • Suburban and Rural Areas: Houses tend to be spaced further out in these neighbourhoods, meaning privacy may not be the biggest concern. However, fences can serve a functional purpose for aesthetic appeal. A well-maintained wood fence or a high-end iron fence can add to your home’s curb appeal and attract buyers looking for character and security.
  • Community Standards and HOA Guidelines: It is important to remember to adhere to local regulations and homeowner association guidelines so that your fence installation enhances value without causing legal issues.

As a homeowner, considering these factors can help you decide how to enhance your yard and how it may affect resale value. Resolut Construction can guide you toward the right materials, design, and advice on community standards, resulting in added value to your home.

Benefits Beyond Resale Value

While the potential to increase your home's market value is certainly appealing, the benefits of installing a fence extend far beyond financial gains! Even if selling your home isn't on the horizon, consider the ways a fence can add to your own enjoyment of your property.

Security and Privacy

In urban environments where your neighbours may be a few metres away, a fence is invaluable. Here’s how a fence can increase security and privacy:

  • Security: Having a fence can deter trespassers from entering your backyard, or your home. It acts as a physical barrier that can protect both your property and your safety.
  • Privacy: Our neighbours may be nice people, but we don’t always want them in our line of sight. Fences obstruct views from neighbours or passersby, allowing you and your family to enjoy your outdoor living space without being interfered with. Fences can also block out noise to keep your conversations private.

Lifestyle Enhancement

Security and privacy aren’t the only advantages. Fences can create well-defined living spaces that are both functional and enjoyable:

  • Safe Play Areas: For families with children or pets, fences can create a safe enclosure where they can play freely without the worry of them wandering off. This gives parents and pet owners peace of mind.
  • Aesthetic and Recreational Space: A well-designed fence can turn a simple backyard into a beautiful oasis. Your yard may be used for many purposes, including gardening, entertaining, relaxing, or pool activities. Having a fence provides a structured space that allows you to enjoy these activities in privacy.

With Resolut Construction’s fencing expertise, we can help provide a safe, secure, and structured living space that can make your backyard a more enjoyable place to occupy.

Installation Considerations

A properly installed fence is important for functionality and maximizing its potential value enhancement. Here is a list of key considerations when deciding between hiring a professional and building your fence, as well as navigating the legal and practical aspects of fence installation.

Professional vs. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Installation

DIY projects may be tempting, but the process of installing a fence can be much more complex and often demands professional expertise for several reasons:

  • Durability and Quality: Professional installers have the knowledge and proper tools to build a long-lasting fence. Uneven terrain or unusual yard shapes can become quite a tedious task for a DIY project, which may compromise the end result.
  • Aesthetics: Professionals can determine which materials and paint to use to match your home's style. Our expertise not only helps fences serve their desired purpose but also increases property appearance.
  • Value Addition: A professionally installed fence is likely to come with warranties and guarantees that add value in the eyes of potential buyers, something that DIY installations typically lack.

Legal and Practical Considerations

There are several legal and practical issues that only a professional fence installer may be aware of; this can prevent any stress further down the line when looking to sell your home:

  • Permits: Depending on which areas you live in, your location may require a permit to install a fence. Our professionals can help determine if a permit is required and confirm that your fence meets all local guidelines.
  • Property Lines: DIY projects typically don’t have the immediate resources to figure out the right property boundaries.
  • Local Regulations: Understanding local regulations, including height restrictions or materials approved by homeowner associates, can save you the trouble of having to take down and rebuild your fence. Professionals are familiar with these regulations and can ensure compliance, preventing any potential issues.

Installing a fence can most certainly increase property value by providing safety, security, and lifestyle enhancements. With the right materials, design, and neighbourhood compatibility, a fence can increase your home’s curb appeal, adding value when it's time to sell. Trust professionals like Resolut Construction to maximize the ROI of your home and enjoyment of your outdoor space!

Composite vs. Wood Decking: The Pros and Cons for Your Backyard

composite deck decorated with outdoor furniture

Choosing the right deck material is a big part of completing your yard's look. But with so many options, it can be tough to decide: natural wood or composite? While this question is on many homeowner's minds, it may be quite difficult to decide without knowing all the facts.

While wood decks have a classic charm, composite decks offer a low-maintenance alternative. Here, we will discuss the pros and cons of each material to help you choose which type of deck is best for your outdoor living space.

With Resolut Construction’s expertise in building both composite and wood decks, we’re here to make your decking journey easier, ensuring your final choice reflects your lifestyle and personal preferences. If you’re planning to install a new deck in the near future or would like your existing one looked at, don’t hesitate to reach out. We will gladly come to assist with your project!

What is Composite Decking?

Composite decking offers an innovative, eco-conscious alternative to traditional outdoor flooring, utilizing recycled materials (plastics and wood fibres) for a greener footprint. Combining style and substance, composite decks deliver outstanding performance and eye-catching aesthetics, making them a strong contender against traditional wood decking.

Key Features of Composite Decks

  • Low Maintenance: Composite decks require little to no maintenance. They eliminate the hassle of yearly sanding, staining, or sealing, reducing the costs and time it takes to maintain your deck.

  • Moisture Resistant: Unlike wood, composite decks do not absorb moisture, which prevents common decking issues such as rot, warping, and termite infestations. This ensures a longer lifespan, saving you time on upkeep and replacement costs.

  • Durability: Constructed to last through weather conditions and everyday use, composite decks maintain their appearance without losing integrity over time.

Visual Appeal of Composite Decks

  • Colour Variety: Composite decks offer a broad range of colours that can match your backyard oasis. From bold wood shades to contemporary hues, there is a diverse set of shades for any preference.

  • Texture Options: While composite decking offers textures that beautifully mimic natural wood, it also opens doors to creative expression with a variety of alternative patterns and finishes.

  • Design Flexibility: With its adaptable nature, composite decking complements any outdoor style, whether you're improving an existing space or starting from scratch.

Pros of Composite Decking

Homeowners who prioritize durability, sustainability, and overall cost efficiency may want to consider composite decking. Here’s why it's a good option:

Durability and Maintenance: As mentioned above, composite decks are built to last and do not face common wooden deck issues such as potential mold or fading over time. It can withstand severe weather conditions without needing repairs and will maintain its original look for years to come, keeping a brand-new appearance. Occasional cleaning, like wiping your deck, is all that is technically required.

Cost-Efficiency Over Time: Although it is a larger expense than wood decks upfront, over time composite decking becomes less expensive due to minimal upkeep and minimal repair costs. Composite decks are a long-term investment that makes your initial purchase well worth it, especially for budget-conscious homeowners.

Eco-Friendliness: Many people take sustainability into account when purchasing materials for their homes. Made from recycled plastic and wood fibres, composite decks support environmentally conscious efforts by reusing materials instead of cutting down trees.

Cons of Composite Decking

While there are many benefits to composite decking, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks before choosing to install this option.

Initial Costs: In comparison to traditional wood, composite decks have a higher upfront cost. The good news is that maintenance and repair costs are minimal to none, making it a one-time purchase.

Aesthetic Limitations: While composite decking offers a wide range of colours and textures designed to mimic the look of wood, some may feel the look falls short of true wood due to a more artificial appearance.

What is Wood Decking?

A classic choice for outdoor living, wood decks bring a timeless natural aesthetic to any backyard. Their natural beauty and the variety offered by different wood species create unique outdoor spaces.

Types of Wood Decking

Hardwoods: "Popular choices for hardwood decking include Ipe (pronounced EE-pay, also known as Brazilian walnut), Cumaru, Garapa, and Tigerwood. These exotic hardwoods, often sourced from South America, are known for their rich hues and exceptional durability. With good maintenance, hardwood decks have been known to last for decades.

Softwoods: Cedar, Pine, and Redwood are common softwoods used in decking. Generally softer and more pliable than hardwoods, they are easier to work with and offer a more budget-friendly option.

Natural Appeal of Wood Decking

Visual Harmony: Wood decks complement the natural landscape. Whether surrounded by lush gardens or towering trees, a wood deck extends your living space into nature.

Unique Grain and Colour: No two wood planks are alike. Each has its own distinct grain pattern and colour variations, creating a truly personalized and irreplaceable deck. It's this individual character that sets wood decking apart.

Versatile Styling: The great part about wood decking is that it can be customized to fit your design preferences. Wood decking offers endless possibilities to make your backyard vision reality, whether you prefer a rustic retreat or a polished, stained finish.

Pros of Wood Decking

Wood decking offers a range of benefits that continue to appeal to homeowners who value traditional charm and versatility. Here are some examples of why wood decking may be a better option for you:

Cost-Effectiveness Upfront: Wood decking often appeals to budget-conscious homeowners due to its lower initial cost compared to composite materials. This also saves money in preparation for potential upkeep costs in the future.

Customization: The ability to stain wood decking opens up a world of possibilities. From vibrant tones to subtle shades, the colour choices are virtually endless, all while maintaining the look of a natural wood finish.

Feel and Authenticity: There is a certain charm to an authentic, wood deck. Its natural textures and unique patterns provide a visually enticing experience that a synthetic material may struggle to replicate. The classic, organic appeal of traditional wood decking remains a strong selling point.

Cons of Wood Decking

There are many benefits to wood decking, however, it can also come with its set of challenges that homeowners should know.

Cost Over Time: Wood decking is more affordable when you initially buy it, but the ongoing maintenance such as staining, treatments, and eventual replacement costs can end up being more expensive than expected.

Maintenance: Wood comes with its own set of demands. Maintaining the look and durability of your deck requires work and costs money. To preserve its appearance, wood decks require regular care such as annual staining and sealing. This protects your deck from damage over time. Having your deck inspected and repaired for weather-related damages and long-term use should also be noted.

Durability Concerns: All natural resources are susceptible to environmental stressors, including wood. Moisture can lead to rot or mold if the wood isn’t properly sealed. Termites can also pose a threat to the structural integrity of your deck. Weather and general usage of your deck can cause wood to age quicker compared to composite materials, requiring more repairs.

Composite Decking vs. Wood Decking

Let’s look at a head-to-head comparison of composite decking vs. wood decking:

Cost

  • Composite: With higher initial costs, composite decks have zero to little long-term expenses due to minimal maintenance.

  • Wood: Although there’s a lower cost upfront, long-term expenses such as treatment and repairs may cause you to pay the same amount or more than composite materials.

Maintenance

  • Composite: Since there is no need for staining or sealing, composite materials only require basic cleaning to maintain a fresh appearance.

  • Wood: To support longevity, wood decking needs to be stained and sealed annually, and may also need to be repaired occasionally.

Durability

  • Composite: This material doesn’t absorb moisture and is highly durable and resistant to mold, rotting, and insect damage.

  • Wood: Being susceptible to moisture, insects, and wear over time, wood decking may need more frequent repairs depending on the type of wood used.

Aesthetic

  • Composite: Offering a wide range of colours and textures, composite decking can replicate wood, but there may be subtle differences that make it appear less authentic.

  • Wood: With a natural look and feel, wood decking is a great option to maintain the natural aesthetic of your backyard to compliment gardens, bushes, and trees.

Lifestyle Considerations

  • For Busy Homeowners: Composite decking may be a better option for those looking for a low-maintenance deck.

  • For Traditionalists: Wood decking is best for those who value a natural and traditional aesthetic, and don’t mind putting in the work to maintain a long-lasting deck.

Ultimately, the choice between the low-maintenance durability of composite decking and the natural beauty of wood depends on your individual needs and priorities. Consider your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences to determine the best fit for your outdoor space.

Backyard Landscaping Techniques to Block Neighbourhood Noise

seated women holding coffee up outdoors

Backyards are supposed to be a place to enjoy the outdoors. However, constant interruptions such as traffic, barking dogs, and loud neighbours can disrupt your relaxation.

Noise pollution is a common issue in residential areas, and its constant presence can transform your backyard retreat into a source of frustration.

Fortunately, there are many backyard noise reduction solutions that can help. Let’s explore the power of landscaping to block neighbourhood noise and provide a peaceful, backyard experience.

1. Install a Noise Reducing Fence

When it comes to reclaiming the tranquility of your backyard, a tall, sturdy fence is your best friend.

By creating a physical barrier, the fence works to absorb and reflect sound waves, effectively blocking out the noise that disrupts your outdoor enjoyment. The denser and more solid the noise-blocking fence, the better it will be at reflecting noise.

Not every fence is suitable for noise reduction, there are certain materials you need to use to block out sound. Masonry walls made of stone or stucco-covered concrete are considered the best materials for bouncing off sound waves. However, these materials may not be in every homeowner’s budget.

Solid wood fences are a great alternative to prevent noise and are more affordable to install than stone or concrete.

The design of a noise-blocking fence can also affect how well it can soundproof your backyard.

  • Solid fences with no gaps are your best bet, as they prevent sound waves from sneaking through cracks and openings.

  • Height matters too: the taller your fence, the more it acts as a sound barrier. Building it as tall as local regulations allow will reduce noise.

  • Be sure your fence extends all the way to the ground, eliminating any gaps underneath. This will help to significantly reduce noise infiltration.

  • If you can see where the noise is coming from, you’re more likely to hear it, so removing the source of the noise from your vision helps a tad bit more.

While noise-blocking fences serve a practical purpose, they often fall short in the looks department. But there's a simple solution that not only beautifies your backyard but also helps reduce noise: plants! Evergreen trees and shrubs, in particular, can dramatically enhance the appearance of a fence, softening its hard lines and adding a touch of natural beauty.

As a bonus, dense foliage acts as a natural sound barrier, absorbing sound waves and creating a more peaceful environment.

A well-built fence that is tall and has no gaps is the most effective way to drown out loud noises. Choosing materials that can boost noise reduction while adding specific plants can create a more peaceful, private space for your backyard activities.

2. Integrate Plants

While all plants offer some degree of sound absorption, evergreens stand out as particularly effective noise reducers. Unlike deciduous plants that lose their leaves in the fall, evergreens provide a consistent sound barrier throughout the year. Their dense foliage acts like a natural soundproofing blanket, absorbing and diffusing noise to create a more peaceful atmosphere.

Evergreens like Arborvitae, Leyland Cypress, and Boxwood are excellent choices for adding privacy and greenery to your backyard. When paired with a fence, the dense leaves and height of these evergreens create a powerful barrier that can help reduce noise.

Hollies, Junipers, Dogwood, Magnolia, Plum, and Cherry trees are also beautiful options that can also help reduce noise in your backyard.

To maximize noise reduction, design your planting bed in layers. Start with tall evergreens at the back, then add a mix of flowering trees and shrubs in the front rows. This layered approach creates a denser barrier, absorbing more sound.

For even better results, consider creating mounds of soil to place plants to add height, resulting in further sound absorption.

The closer the plants and shrubs are to the source of noise, the better they will reduce sound. Position plants and shrubs to block your view of the noise source, especially around areas where you want to relax. This strategic placement will help minimize the noise that reaches your ears and create a more peaceful backyard.

Strategically integrating plants not only helps reduce unwanted sounds but also enhances the aesthetics and privacy of your backyard. With careful selection and specific placement of plants, you can reap the benefits of a naturally beautiful, and quieter outdoor space during all four seasons.

3. Install a Water Feature

Water features introduce calming background noises that can dilute unwanted sounds in your backyard. The sound of running water creates a white noise effect that helps drown out less desirable sounds like chatty neighbours, barking dogs, or loud music. The gentle, yet consistent noise can add to the aesthetic appeal of your backyard and transform it into a tranquil retreat.

There are many types of water features to consider, depending on the amount of room and budget. Basic fountains, such as birdbaths with recirculation pumps, are easy to install, adding a light touch of luxury and pleasant sounds of water.

For a more extravagant effect, consider installing streams, waterfalls, or ponds with recirculating water. These larger decorations can create a serene auditory experience, enhancing the overall atmosphere of your backyard.

Where you place your water features matters for effective of noise reduction. To maximize their noise-masking abilities, place them close to the areas where you spend the most time, such as seating areas or patios. The closer the water feature is to the listener, the more it can distract from unwanted sounds. Placing each installation near the house can also help mask noise from busy streets or loud neighbours.

By installing water features into your backyard, you not only add to the beauty of your backyard but also create a peaceful auditory mask that helps block out constant noise. This combination of visual and audio enhancements can remarkably improve the overall atmosphere of your outdoor living space, making it more peaceful and relaxing.

4. Create Visual Barriers

Psychoacoustics, or how our brains make sense of sound, plays an interesting role in how we perceive noise in our environment.

When the source of noise is hidden from view, our brains are less likely to register the noise as an interruption, making it easier to relax and enjoy your backyard. Visual barriers, such as trees and shrubs, can noticeably reduce the mental impact of unwanted sounds by creating an “out of sight, out of mind” approach.

Strategically planting trees and shrubs to block sight lines from screaming children, honking horns, or barking dogs can create a significant psychological barrier. Even if the actual noise level doesn’t change dramatically, the perception of a quieter environment can improve your overall comfort and satisfaction with your backyard quiet time.

As we discussed earlier, for year-round noise reduction and visual appeal, consider adding a mix of evergreen and seasonal plants. In addition to evergreens, incorporating seasonal plants can add beauty to your backyard.

Hydrangeas, lilacs, and spirea are popular options that provide vibrant colours and fragrances throughout spring and summer. These plants not only enhance the landscape of your backyard but also contribute to the subconscious reduction of noise by creating an elegant, and warm-coloured environment.

Remember to strategically plant these flowers in layered planting beds can boost their effectiveness. Start in the back with tall evergreens to build a solid visual barrier, and then add layers of shrubs and seasonal plants in front.

By taking advantage of psychoacoustics and using visual barriers, you can create a backyard retreat that feels more pleasant and secluded. Combining both evergreen and seasonal plants will provide year-round relaxation and attractive visuals, making your outdoor space a more enjoyable place to independently read a book or spend quality time with family.

5. Additional Noise-Cancelling Techniques

In addition to fences, plants, and water features, there are other strong methods to reduce unpleasant noise in your backyard.

  • Outdoor speakers can be a great solution to distract from irritating sounds. By playing soothing music or nature sounds like birds chirping or beach waves, you can create an auditory experience that helps drown out unwanted disturbances. These speakers can be discreetly placed around your backyard, even designed to blend in with the landscape of your backyard, such as faux rocks or planters.

  • Sheds can serve as physical barriers, blocking sound waves and adding storage space.

  • Pergolas and trellises when combined with climbing plants create a natural sound barrier.

  • Sunken patios can lower the noise level by physically distancing your seating area from the sight of noise, utilizing the “out of sight, out of mind” technique.

Creating a peaceful backyard with no interruptions involves using fences, plants, water installations, outdoor speakers, and structures. By combining these methods, you can significantly reduce persistent noise and enhance the atmosphere of your outdoor living space.

Resolut Construction specializes in building fences and decks designed to make your backyard more enjoyable. Pool Safety Fencing: Get Ready for Spring Swimming Season

Spring and summer are the perfect times to swim, but like any activity, you must take precautions. You should have a pool safety fence, especially if you have pets or small kids.

While you may be tempted to forgo this measure to save money, there’s a lot more at stake if you do. Pool fences prevent pets, small children, and even animals from wandering into your pool by accident. This is essential for people with families or one, or even multiple pets.

Pool drownings, according to Health Infobase Canada, had the highest percentage of drowning deaths at 34.9%. Of these recorded cases, 65.5% involved children under the age of 15.

A good pool fence design offers an essential barrier that safeguards anyone using the pool and those who could wander in it accidentally. By incorporating a pool fence that fits the aesthetic of your outdoor space, you're taking a proactive step in creating a secure environment for everyone who enjoys your pool.

Not to mention a pool fence comes with several other benefits that most people don’t consider. Today, the experts of Resolut Fence and Deck will break down some of the best perks of having a pool safety fence for your springtime oasis.

The Benefits of a Pool Safety Fence

Several key benefits come with having a pool safety fence, from enhanced security to improving the overall look of your space. Let’s break down some of the main benefits:

1. Ensuring the Safety of Pets and Children

Perhaps the most important benefit of pool safety fencing for your outdoor space is its increased protection for children and your pets.

Fences provide you with a physical barrier that stops accidental slips and unsupervised access to your pool. This is essential for people with young kids and pets prone to curiosity because it helps eliminate the potential for accidents.

It also helps create an environment where you can teach your kids more about pool safety and how to interact with the pool in an informed way.

2. Create Privacy and Define Your Boundaries!

Perhaps the second most important benefit of a pool safety fence is the increase in privacy. Everyone loves the idea of having an oasis away from prying eyes, whether that be neighbours or passersby. This sense of privacy is vital when it comes to creating a private pool and swimming experience. Eliminating the potential for external interruptions or disturbances can help in this effort. Also, having a firm boundary defining the pool area can help prevent other yard activities from impacting the space. No wayward soccer balls or unwanted grass clippings in your pool.

3. Improving Appeal and Increasing Property Value

Modern-day pool safety fences can be implemented with the overall design and aesthetic of your outdoor space in mind. A good-looking fence can provide a nice touch to your property, even coming with the benefit of increasing its market value. Whether you prefer a classic iron fence or something sleeker like glass—you can match whatever suits your style.

Understanding Pool Enclosure Permits

It's important to consider several things when it comes to adding a pool safety fence, including the permits you'll be required to have before moving forward with your project. In this scenario, we'll be looking at regulations in Ontario you'll need to consider:

Before you go ahead and enclose your pool, you'll likely need a permit. While many municipalities don't require a Building Permit for a pool, you do generally require a Building Permit to build a fence around your pool. The Ontario Government has implemented legislation regarding pool safety requirements, including the necessity of a fence, a locked gate, and more. For more information, see Ontario's Bill 74.

While you do not need a Building Permit to install a swimming pool in most municipalities, you do need a Building Permit for:

  • Constructing a pool enclosure (fence)

  • Constructing a deck connected to the pool

It’s also important to remember that the permit process varies by the municipality.

For example:

  • In Toronto, acquiring a permit starts with obtaining a Zoning Certificate. Simply fill out the Zoning Form and send it to [email protected] via email.

  • On the other hand, in Hamilton, you can conveniently submit an ePlan application online.

Should You Let Your Neighbours Know?

The answer to this question is short and sweet. No, you don’t need to tell your neighbour that you are building a backyard pool.

The government of Ontario doesn't require you to let your neighbours know if you're building a pool, but there are some situations where you should. Such as if you plan on building a pool safety fence. For more information, see the Government of Ontario

When it comes to making the decision to build a pool safety fence for your pool this spring, you should consider trusting the experts at Resolut Deck and Fence.

Understanding the Basics of Pool Safety Measures

Installing a pool safety fence is only one step in the equation when it comes to keeping everyone using your pool safe. To ensure you're making the most of your pool safety fence, we will cover some additional safety protocols for your pool.

Avoid swimming alone

There will naturally be times when you want to take a solo dip, but swimming alone comes with serious risks. If you get a cramp or suffer a sudden health event, there won't be anyone there to help you in an emergency. Make sure that if you plan to take a dip on your own, you let someone know, along with the average amount of time you spend in the water. Also, this goes without saying, but: NEVER, EVER, allow children to be around a pool unsupervised, even if you're confident in their swimming ability. Even strong swimmers can run into issues in the water. If you have kids playing in and around the pool, there must be an adult present.

Be prepared to intervene in case of an emergency

You must be prepared to act in case of an emergency, which means you must have access to the right equipment - including a safety hook or even a floatation device. These items need to be accessible and easy to grab at a moment's notice.

You should also have a means of contacting 911 if necessary, meaning you should always have a cellphone available to make emergency calls. Keep it far enough from the water that it isn't at risk of damage, but close enough that you can access it in an emergency. If an emergency does strike, saving those essential seconds to make a 911 call could be the difference between life and death. Also, if you have a pool, it's highly recommended to be certified in CPR and first aid. If you are certified, make sure your certifications are up-to-date and you're confident enough to perform life-saving measures.

Limit any outside access to your pool, whether it from children or adults

Ensure that your pool isn't accessible, intentionally or accidentally by other adults or children. Even your pets can be at risk if your pool doesn't have a proper barrier. This is why it's extremely advisable to have a pool safety fence in place to maximize the security of your pool while minimizing the risk of an accident.
